The Wool Tops Shrinkproofing Line is a wool-tops mill's dedicated shrink-resist and lustre line, completing chlorine descaling and lustre treatment on wool tops in one continuous pass. Undyed wool tops gain stable resistance to felting shrinkage, with the lustre and soft handle of cashmere and silk. QL's Wool Tops Shrinkproofing Line, the WPF-MTFSSG, covers every stage on this line from chlorination through to drying.
Where this machine sits in the line, and what comes before and after
This line follows combing and precedes spinning, handling the shrinkproofing step. Tops are pieced first — on the WPF-NJ piecer — then fed onto the entry creel, running through an optional Basolan pre-treatment station, the chlorination unit, multi-stage chemical finishing, through-flow drum drying, an optional vacuum cold-drying conditioning unit, and delivery — a ball winder or the WPF-PT top coiler. Where a mill already runs the WPF-MTFX backwashing line, the two lines serve different purposes: backwashing removes oil and residue, while this line does the shrink-resist finishing and itself ends in a rinse-and-dry stage; whether a mill needs both lines depends on its process route — check with QL.
What it changes in the fabric, top or yarn: handle, dimensional stability, lustre, cleanliness
This line gives the tops stable dimensional stability, lustre and a soft handle, but not cleanliness — that is the WPF-MTFX backwashing line's job. Wool fibres carry scales arranged in one direction; in the wash, those scales ratchet into a neighbouring fibre's scales and lock in place — the directional frictional effect — and untreated wool can shrink to about 55% of its original size on the first wash. This line applies controlled active chlorine to descale the fibre continuously and evenly, weakening that friction; a resin coats the inter-scale gaps to block interlocking, and a softener improves handle. With the scales refined smooth, lustre and handle emerge, whiteness stays largely unchanged, mass loss is minimal, and lower dye uptake means dyeing is more level and sparing downstream. Cleanliness is the WPF-MTFX backwashing line's job, not this line's.
Why this machine is necessary: what happens without it, or with another method
Left untreated, wool's directional frictional effect causes irreversible felting in the wash — the problem shrink-resist treatment exists to solve. Batch, immersion-style chlorination struggles to hold liquor concentration constant, so shade and whiteness vary between batches. This line treats every top with continuously, precisely replenished liquor at a uniform concentration — an impeller pump drives liquor through the top layer rather than by static immersion — the direct source of consistency. Incomplete neutralisation leaves resin uptake uneven and can cause yellowing in drying; skipping conditioning afterward leaves moisture regain unstable, affecting downstream spinning.
Setting the parameters: temperature, tension, speed, time
Line speed runs 2–12 m/min (typically 8–10 m/min), with ±1.5 °C temperature uniformity, heated indirectly by saturated steam. Creel unwind tension is variable-frequency adjustable; differential overfeed between drum sections drops tension as bulk recovers, and tops sit tension-free on the drum under gentle vacuum. Chlorination, rinsing, resin and softener each run their own temperature and timing windows, set to the order's process card and customer samples — ask QL for the process sheet.
The questions customers ask most
- Why does wool shrink in the wash when other fibres do not?
- Are shrink resistance and a soft handle at odds — will the treatment leave the tops harsh or yellowed?
- Why does batch shrink-resist treatment give shade and whiteness differences between batches?
- It handles white tops — can dyed tops (dyed before or after spinning) run on this line too?
- We already have a wool tops backwashing line (MTFX) — do we still need a separate shrinkproofing line?
- What is superwash wool?
Which process routes it appears on
This line appears on wool-tops mills' Shrink-resist and lustre treatment of wool tops route as a required step; it is absent from wool-tops mills' other route, Top-dyed recombing, and from the routes for worsted, woollen, and knitwear mills.
