Four-Channel Wool Scouring and Milling Machine (WPF-4XS)

Scouring and milling in one machine, with four independently set channels so different colours and weights run together without queuing for a shared recipe.

The combined scouring and milling machine performs scouring and milling in one pass, with four channels set independently. Different colours and weights therefore run together without queuing for a shared recipe. QL's Four-Channel Wool Scouring and Milling Machine (WPF-4XS) covers this step for worsted mills, woollen mills, and wool or wool-blend knit finishers.

Where this machine sits in the line, and what comes before and after

The combined scouring and milling machine sits after fabric inspection and mending, and after tubular seaming, which keeps creases from being milled into the fabric. Scouring and milling run as one process here, or as two separate single-channel machines, or mill first then open-width spread and wash — three alternatives, not a fixed sequence. Afterwards, depending on the route, fabric may go on to piece dyeing, or to rope de-twisting, open-width squeezing, and wet raising and setting.

What it changes in the fabric, top or yarn: handle, dimensional stability, cleanliness

Scouring removes what is left on greige fabric — spinning lubricants, sizing agents, oil stains — so the fabric is clean enough for the next stage. Wool milling works through the differential frictional effect: fibre scales point toward the tip and ratchet together, so agitation drives fibres toward the root, shrinking the fabric in both warp and weft; the face thickens, the handle becomes fuller, the weave is covered — what the trade calls high cover — air permeability drops, and strength rises. This shrinkage cannot be reversed, and the fabric's dimensions are fixed at this stage.

Why this machine is necessary: what happens without it, or with another method

Under-milled fabric leaves the face under-covered, the handle thin, short of the weight an order calls for. Over-milling cannot be undone — the fabric is scrapped, and can also yellow or over-shrink — so the stopping point must be judged precisely. Running scouring and milling as separate single-channel machines means batches queue for a full change of water and auxiliaries — output slows, and sharing a bath risks cross-shading, which is exactly what the WPF-4XS's four independently set channels solve. Rope-form processing, handled poorly, can press creases into the fabric — a known risk across the industry; the internal high-efficiency blower keeps continuous airflow, repositioning the crease points to control that risk at the source.

Setting the parameters: temperature, speed, fabric slot

The rubber-roller WPF-4XS-R runs 0–400 m/min with a 40–180 mm slot; the solid-wood WPF-4XS-W runs 0–250 m/min with a 40–220 mm slot. Bath temperature, liquor ratio, and squeeze frequency depend on wool content, fibre fineness, yarn twist, and weave density — there is no fixed value, set by sample trial, with a process sheet available from QL on request. A touchscreen handles process switching, settings, and diagnostics; an optional speed-detection auto-stop lets each channel carry its own milling target, stopping once reached while the others continue.

The questions customers ask most

  • Different colours and weights have to run in separate batches — how do I stop that slowing my output?
  • Can heavy woollens and light worsteds run on the same machine?
  • Do scouring and milling really need separate machines, or is one enough?
  • Can the fabric be torn or damaged in the machine?
  • Can rope-form scouring and milling press permanent creases into the fabric?
  • What actually happens to the fabric during wool milling — why does the face become thicker and fuller?

Which process routes it appears on

The combined scouring and milling machine appears on the routes of three customer types: worsted mills, woollen mills, and wool or wool-blend knit finishers. For worsted mills the step is optional — most worsted fabric is not milled, flannel excepted. For woollen mills and wool/blend knit finishers, it is mandatory.

Available with a rubber-roller (WPF-4XS-R) or solid-wood-roller (WPF-4XS-W) configuration to match the fabric; for model selection or process parameters, contact QL via WhatsApp +1 380 900 2442, or +86 189 2110 8080.
